Prepositions of place (addresses)

We use IN, ON and AT to refer to different parts of an address. Again, the rules are very simple.

  • Use IN to refer to a city, town, village, country, etc. (any political boundary):
I live in Makati. He lives in Pampanga.
My parents live in the United States. The school is in Barangay New Hope.
My office is in Taguig. There are many beaches in the Philippines.
  • Use ON to refer to a street, road, avenue, etc:
I live on J.P. Rizal Avenue. There was an accident on 3rd street.
There is a rally on Edsa. The car was heading north on Roxas Boulevard.
My office is on Valero Street. The gas station is on the main highway.
  • Use AT to refer to a precise location (which usually means a numbered address):
I live at #6 J.P. Rizal. I'll meet you at 6742 Jefferson Road.
The office is at #17 Third Street. He lives at No. 7.
My office is at 105 Valero Street. He lives at Lot 6 Block 3.
